Review of Happiest Season 2021 Netflix Movie:
Harper (Mackenzie Davis) reluctantly invites his girlfriend Abby (Kristen Stewart) to their conservative family Christmas. Abby excitedly plans to propose but Harper reveals that she lied about appearing in front of her family. They have to pretend to be straight while Harper's father (Victor Garber) runs for mayor. His mother (Mary Steenburgen) is under stress. Harper is constantly competing with older sister Sloane (Alison Brie). Jane (Mary Holland) is the unseen strange sister. Riley (Aubrey Plaza) is Harper's ex. John (Dan Levy) is Abby's friend.
It's basically a traditional Christmas comedy with all the rom-coms and family dysfunction toppings. It adds new gay coming-of-age storytelling to the mix. Actresses Clée Duvall and Mary Holland are writers and filmmakers. Klee is not necessarily a seasoned director and it shows in some scenes. Mostly, it's a fun romp with a serious premise. I really like all the actors. Davis and Stewart are good together. I'll probably switch Steenburgen for someone more tall. He needs to be more waspi. Comedy is great, though sometimes it needs a sharp pen. There are also different vowels. Sometimes, they collide. The denial drags on for a bit too long. Not everything needs a wrap-up and the comedic tone fades after a while. It's all so good.
